These vintage wooden quills or pirns are from a textile mill that is no longer in business. These bobbins or pirns can be used in spinning and weaving to hold a yarn while plying or weaving. Each bobbin is approximately 8 inches long. The diameter of the wooden end of the bobbin is approximately 0.926". The photo shows 0.926" and varies slightly bobbin-to-bobbin. The diameter of the hole is highly tapered and measures 0.437" or app. 7/16". It also varies slightly when I measure others. The diameter of the metal rings is approximately 1.07". The diameter of the hole will fit a 1/4 inch rod. The depth of the hole is 2 3/4 to 3 1/4 inches.
